Primary School Reconstruction – Harewa Village
Harewa Primary School is located in the same village where a potable water project, supported by SFC, is nearing completion. The school was originally built 12 years ago by community members using simple materials mainly wood, soil, and water to ensure their children had access to a school close to home. Without it, children would have had to walk 8 kilometers through difficult terrain, crossing a river and passing through forested areas, an unsafe journey, especially for the youngest ones.
Today, the school composed of 12 classrooms serves 542 children from kindergarten till grade 8. Based on a needs assessment conducted in 2024 and 2025 including site visits, discussions with community members, students, school teachers, and parents and direct observation it is clear that the school has reached a critical point.
The classrooms are in severe disrepair, with crumbling walls, dusty floors that turn muddy when it rains, and roofs that leak during any rainfall. The structures offer little protection from the wind, and overall, the environment is far from healthy or conducive to learning. The toilet facilities are also well below acceptable standards and pose serious health risks. These conditions discourage regular attendance, and some older students, particularly those in grades 6, 7, and 8, end up dropping out because they can no longer cope with the environment.
Without reconstruction, the school will continue to put children’s health at risk and limit their ability to learn. Rebuilding Harewa Primary School is not only essential for improving education, but also vital for protecting the well-being and future of the community’s children.

Project Plan and Objectives:
- Reconstruct all 12 classrooms of the primary school.
- Construct two separate toilet facilities.
- Supply school equipment and materials (desks, teachers’ tables, blackboards, reference books, sports materials, etc.).
- Conduct training sessions and workshops for local community and the School Management Committee on the importance of education, women’s and children’s rights, and sustainable infrastructure maintenance.
- Provide training and support for the organization of women into self-help groups, focusing on women’s and children’s rights, small income-generating activities (savings and credit), and the importance of women’s institutions and leadership.
